Re: Bellsouth/AT&T DSL by the end of the year
Call it what you will, DSL or broadband, most people only know high speed as being called DSL. It's just a term that people can relate to more. So to correctly state the fact, AT&T offers broadband service through DSL, Wireless, and Satelite. AT&T stated they would have some type of broadband service to all of their customers by 2008. They have now fullfilled their end of the bargain its sad to say. Wireless and satelite costs more than DSL but they have never said they will provide everyone with the same cost, so if you want it you must pay for it.
After the merger was announced all sites for DSL were "capped" by Bellsouth. This means that there would not be any money spent on these sites. In the Spring AT&T uncapped all sites but there has still been no provisioning for DSL. AT&T has begun implementing their next "big thing" in the major markets. So the money that could be spent on equipment to offer DSL in rural markets is being spent on this new service. AT&T calls it "UVERSE", a service that provides phone, broadband, and tv on demand. Upper management will tell you that they don't know why DSL is not being put into place in this area or that it will be coming soon. The fact of the matter is why you would pay several thousand dollars to install DSL equipment across the network and then turn around a year or two later and pay several more thousand dollars to upgrade or even replace that equipment to operate UVERSE. We are working very hard installing more and more fiber optic cable getting everything ready for the future of the company. Just to let you know exactly how much fiber, you can only have about 1 mile of copper between your home or business and the main equipment.
Although it will take a long time to have everyone ready for this service I don't think anyone will be disappointed once it's here. But one thing you need to note also, the telephone industry is just like the computer industry. Todays greatest thing will be replaced with an all new greatest thing tomorrow.
