Howard defeats Turner in race for House District 72 seat

From the Tuscaloosa News:

Quote:
Political newcomer Ralph Howard defeated Perry County Commissioner Albert Turner Jr. Tuesday in the Democratic primary to fill the empty House District 72 seat.

Howard, 35, won 57 percent of the vote with 4,681 votes. Turner, 41, polled 3,555 votes.

There is no Republican candidate for the House position, which was vacated last year when Bobby Singleton was elected to the state Senate. He replaced Charles Steele, who resigned from the Senate to become national president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Howard, of Greensboro, is an adult education director at the Bibb County Correctional Facility.

Turner, of Marion, served as the assistant director of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs from 1998-2000.

House District 72 includes Hale and Perry Counties, the southern half of Bibb County and the eastern half of Marengo County.
