Some things, people best left alone

Posted 3 Weeks Ago at 15:58 PM by basreb65
Not long ago, someone from my past started contacting me again. When I was at Ole Miss and worked at the radio station, she was one of my "admirers," for want of a better term. In many ways, she is like the character in "Play Misty For Me."
She lives in Dallas--or so she says. That is a story for another time.
Anyway, she got my number through work, and started calling me. At first, it wasn't too bad because we talked about Ole Miss football, and some of the times...

Good to see many of them again

Posted 10-22-2008 at 18:45 PM by basreb65
Last Friday was a busy day for me. Aside from my normal newspaper work, I gave a talk to the Grenada Chapter of the DAR, and my subject was on Southern Writers. They seemed to enjoy it.
After that, I jumped in my car and headed to Booneville for my 25th class reunion. This was the first Class of '83 reunion I attended. I missed the 10-year one in '93, and the 20-year in '03. It turned out to be at least 25-30 people there. We gathered at a restaurant called The Outtatown Eatery. When I walked...

The wonders of fall

Posted 10-06-2008 at 19:06 PM by basreb65
For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed two favorite seasons of the year, that being fall and spring.
As a kid, summer was okay. You were out of school and could go to the pool or whatever. Now that I'm older and working, summer does not hold the same appeal with me.
Fall is of course the time for football, and now, it will soon start feeling like true football weather, what with the tinge of crispness in the fall air. The days are getting shorter and the nights longer as well....

A year in Grenada

Posted 10-01-2008 at 18:47 PM by basreb65
Though I have not read the immortal Charles Dickens's classic A Tale of Two Cities, I wish to use his opening line to describe what is my one-year anniversary of being in Grenada. Or slightly paraphrase it.
It has been the best of times, it has been the worst of times.
I find it hard to believe it is has been a year I began working at The Daily Star. Like anyone else, there are parts of my job I love, and there are some I would not wish on my worst enemy.
I cover a myriad of things,...

This Rebel will miss Larry Munson

Posted 09-22-2008 at 19:38 PM by basreb65
Last year, I put out a post about favorite radio play-by-play announcers, and I think Georgia's Larry Munson was mentioned a time or two.
I heard on the radio that Munson--who was limiting himself to calling Georgia home games only--is leaving the booth for good.
I will miss his one of a kind gravel-like voice and his "Whaddya got, Loran."
I'll remember the "Run Lindsey Run" call from the 1980 UGA-Florida game, as well as the "We stepped on their face with...
