"Shop Local" also applies to the web

I admit, I enjoy my Twitter account--mostly because I can post from my phone. Facebook has proven a nice little retreat from the fast, ugly underbelly of the internet (it's amazing how much restraint and thoughtfulness for the fellow man/woman is shown when real names are attached to online persona's). Myspace is still a ****hole (pardon my French).
For a few years I would bang my head on my desk (figuratively) trying to figure out why--although we offered everything sites like myspace and Facebook did--folks chose not to post here but on these big corporate websites. After some deep thought and a little alcohol, I came to realize it's the same reason folks will drive to Tuscaloosa to by the same pair of shorts they can buy at Perfect Touch.
Tuscaloosa is bigger, therefore whatever is in it must be better.
In terms of Demopolis, we're a big as there is. Compared to Facebook--not so much. I've accepted this. What I don't accept is our Demopolis folks forgetting about their local websites. This includes the Times, who still put up daily content for the most part. This includes any local groups or people that try to create something original. They should be supported, otherwise the will stop trying.
We used to have a good group of fellas that were putting on a weekly live radio show--reason they stopped? No support. We used to produce videos, webtoons, etc. It's hard to get motivated when the majority of your would-be audience is off posting how they are "going to take a shower, then eat some crackers while watching TV", and the rest of your audience finds that more interesting than original content created specifically to entertain others.
I think local folks should support local things. I wouldn't advocate against the "big guys" or the "big cities" - just remember to drop by that local spot and give support as well. We'll keep improving this site as long as we can afford to. Hopefully DLive doesn't go the way of many other fond Demopolis landmarks, lost in the rush for bigger and better.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to post some pics to Facebook then Twitter about it.

Well...seeing as that I don't have Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter, I guess I'm alright...lol. The internet for me is nothing more than a source of news and information. I don't delve into the social networking part of it. I don't have the time, nor the patience to tell everyone that "I'm off to take a shower, eat some crackers and watch TV."Posted 06-15-2009 at 04:55 AM by uwa_amanda

I've been thinking for awhile about suggesting that everyone use their real names. I belong not only to Facebook but also a educational/teaching board and three football coaching boards. All four of them REQUIRE real names to keep professionalism at its highest level.
As for "trading at home" here at DLive, there's hardly a day that goes by that I don't come on the board to at least read. I'll admit that I don't post as much as I once did. It has nothing to do with DLive but more to do with other crap going on in life.
I still have plans for a several blogs myself...one being a fictional serial. I just never seem to find the time to get these blogs started. However, I would only post them here on DLive...not at Facebook or another board. Why? These are homefolks who'll be reading...
Maybe I should get started....Posted 06-15-2009 at 22:07 PM by Kagan

I've never twittered. ever. so, I've no idea what I'm missing.
I've Facebooked before, but my computer found it overwhelming and I just didn't get enuf enjoyment from it to invest any more time not enjoying it.
I'm not even from Demopolis, but I enjoy the dickens out of Dlive. You know, I can have my choice of any website on the internet and I chose this one.
