I just backed up my pictures
I just backed up all of my photos from my computer on to a CD. I can lose any thing on this computer and replace it except those pictures. It only took about an hour and I bought a 10 pack of photo cd's which are triple coated to protect them from scratches for about 8 bucks. If you have a digital camera and I know most of you do, and if you are like me and can not afford to have each and every one of them developed (or even if you can), please take the time to do this simple procedure. This is the time of year when there is a lot of lightning and one good zap and its all she wrote folks!

Also, I need to have my home movies converted from Hi8 to DVD. Please let me know if you know how to do this!

Thanks for the reminder Ramma. I have been meaning to put my pics onto CDs put have been putting it off. Because of your reminder, I will get them done tomorrow while everyone is gone and I am bored here with nothing to do.

$99 or so will get you a DVD recorder. It will copy your vhs/hi-8 tapes like a vcr will. You can do multiple tapes (it auto-creates chapters). Very easy to do.

I have a VHS-DVD converter. It is two or three years old. Never did like it though, the instruction BOOK was not simple enough for my simple mind. Loaned it to someone else, they felt the same way. It does work though and I have saved a few VHSs to cd & dvds. You are welcome to try it, if you like. Maybe you can LEARN me something.

Another Backup option (supplemental to CD/DVD) is to put your files on a USB flash drive. They are dirt cheap and very durable. Just copy everything on there and set the write-protect switch if it has one.

One of the most aggravating parts of the whole deal is that I kept getting an error message every time I would try and do it at first. I had to go into My Computer, right click on the DVD/CD, go to the Auto play tab and change the properties. Now it was no big deal for me to do that because I am used to figuring out why Windows will not do what I want it to do, but why does Windows have to be so darn aggravating? Something so simple as wanting to burn pictures from my computer onto a CD. Someone without the experience that I have with Windows may have given up. Somebody someday is going to get smart and create a user friendly operating system. I hope........

I can get DVD burners closer to $50 now. DVD's are more resilient as well.

Back up your stuff people, its a lot easier to put your pics on a CD than it is for me to recover them after the drive starts clicking or the onboard controller is fried due to a power surge.
The early bird gets the worm...
but the second mouse gets the cheese.

External harddrives for backup are now reasonably priced and you can use those to back up just about any files on your computer and you just need either a USB 2.0 or a firewire connection.
To be or not to be, that is the question.

as far as converting from hi8 to DVD, sure, the best way to go is a home dvd recorder. $100 should put you in the game. i got a magnavox mwr 10D6 from wal-mart back in feb. and it should do you justice if they still have it.
