Summer Activities for Children

Hi everyone! I have a son who will be 4 in June and a 3 month old baby girl! Due to cost and safety, we have decided not to join the pool this summer, but we are looking for some fun inexpensive things to do now and then. I know the public library will have some activities this summer, but was wondering if anyone knows any more specific information about that or knows of any other activities (mostly for my son and sis will just tag along). We will do VBS at our church and a one week vacation at some point, but my children love to live outside and it just gets too hot! Any information or who to contact for some would be really appreciated! THANK YOU!

Re: Summer Activities for Children

I know of people are are putting their children in art classes at the new childrens art center downtown. It is for like an hour 1 or 2 times a week. and I know different places will be having swimming lessons. since your son is 4 both activities may be enjoyable for him.

Thanks!

Re: Summer Activities for Children

Westside Elementary has a whole list of things for the month of June. I'm sure your 4 year old could join in. I'm not sure about the younger one though, sorry. But if you interested, stop by the office and look at the list. Happy Summer!

Re: Summer Activities for Children

There is an article in the local paper today about the summer reading program at the library, but no times are in there. Is it the same every summer as far as the hour preschoolers go for storytime? If so, will someone please tell me what day and time that will be?!?! Thank you!

I talked to someone about it yesterday and I was REALLY considering taking alyssa.. we need something to do this summer, so we can start getting ready for wee-school!

I'm not really sure that there is much else for small children to do in this town.. we should start play group and get together with a bunch of parents and do crafts or something... I have been wanting to do that for a long time but I didn't know if anyone would be interested.

Try the above link. It's the calendar for the summer. It takes it a few seconds to open because there are lots of little pics on it but it should open for you.

Re: Summer Activities for Children

The demopolis library link is full of info...dates, times, ages, etc. Sounds like a summer packed full of fun stuff there. And the winners of the reading contests win $100 Wal-Mart cards, which can be used for gasoline if you need it! With gas prices up, I am so excited Demopolis is going to offer some summer fun because I cannot afford to drive to Tuscaloosa very many times and my legs just aren't going to take me far! Thank you LucyLou for the info!

Re: Summer Activities for Children

About the library activities, does anyone know how long the programs last everyday? Do the parents have to stay or can they come back and pick them up? I work during the day but I know my daughter would love some of the things they have scheduled. Thanks for any info anyone might have.

Re: Summer Activities for Children

Of course, for preschoolers they require a parent. I seriously doubt they really can for children who are older, especially the stuff for 4th-6th graders. The programs usually last about 1 hour, I am told. I think if your daughter is old enough that you don't mind her being alone there, and has a ride, she would be fine. If she is too young, you might want to ask a friend who doesn't work outside the home to consider letting her tag along!

Re: Summer Activities for Children

The library is one of our son's most favorite places to hang out. I think he's checked out every book they have on foreign lands!

I was wondering if you might know of any activities around town for the 10 to 12 year olds. I sure miss the days of the skating rink in Lindern and and bowling alley in Demopolis!

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if some of the programs were like a day camp or just an hour or so long.

Re: Summer Activities for Children

How about letting the kids build a squirrel relocator, I've got a good prototype almost done, going to try it out hopefully soon! Cheap project to build. This will keep the kids occupied the rest of summer! and safer than a BB gun!!!

Im checking now on something I found a couple years ago and it is a place in Meridian that you can take the kids and all sorts of stuff to do and I think it is free! It is kind of like a fort or something! Will post when I find it!
