reserve police force

Just wanted to get the peoples input on the reserve police force that Demopolis is starting

according to the paper, these people are volunteer only and will be certified to carry a gun and trained. They will help at Christmas on the river and at football games and will ride with policmen. If they must be certified to carry a gun, I hope the city pays for that because a volunteer should not have to pay for something like that. However, I don't see why the city would ask a volunteer to something dangerous enough to need to carry a gun (like riding with an officer). I would think the city would be liable if something were to happen to the volunteer.

I think it is a great Idea. Most places have a reserve officers are are very useful during special events and when there is a shortage of man power.

I was reading the description of what they wanted and it got me thinking back when I was in the Junior Police when I was a teenager...

It seems like it almost the exact same thing except they want adults who can legally carry a gun.

Believe me...they need all the help they can get with COTR traffic directing!!

I'm not sure about regular citizens having a badge and carrying a gun. Policemen are trained for a reason. Just having a permit to carry doesn't mean you have the judgment to know when to use it.

Reminds me of Hitler’s Citizen Police (SS) force that later took over the army. I have read several articles that Obama is pushing this policy across the country. I believe that with the dwelling numbers of COTR numbers this is just an excuse to intact more government control over you own personal freedoms. What is a next do we install cameras on our street corners? Wake up people a revolution is brewing.

Theramedic is correct they well be going thru an acadamey put on by the DPD. They will be trained in the same manor as a Regular Officer. Applicants have to pass the same physical requirements as and officer and display good judgement and reactions to all types of situations.

It is going to be a very strict and guided program.

Now ain't this something, some people of Demopolis fussing because the P.D. is getting a larger force but as long as the F.D. has got one F.F. for every street corner we're fine with that. Just don't make sense .

No one's fussing at all. This is just somethign new and people want to know the details. In reading the above posts, the readers here are concerned over untrained people carrying a firearm. From Ranger's and Theramedic's replies, they have stated, that the people will be trained just like a regular police officer. Any "joe blow" who signs up isn't going to be accepted, they are going to have to go through the same process as anyone getting hired onto the police force. Don't try to start something here when there isn't anything to be started.

I'm not surprised by your comment but my post seems fitting. The police dept. is trying to get it's numbers up on a limited budget so let them, you yourself has said that Demopolis is growing so that's why the F.D. is so big, so would it not be fitting that the police dept should grow as well ? I would rather have 30 plus Police Officers that are working all the time than 30 F.F. and a 2 million dollar budget for just a few calls a week.
