Beware of any emails coming in, rather from people you know or not, that have exe files attached. This is the main way the virus is spread. The subject line is normally some random subject, but almost always containing the word "hi".

Best thing to do is keep you virus software updated, keep windows updated with all its critical updates, and beware of ANY email with attachments. Other than that........HOPE FOR THE BEST!

If you don't already have one, buy an antivirus program. Norton, McAfee, Panda, whatever, but get one and install it if you don't already have one.

The second thing is to keep your virus definitions updated! Many people think just because they have an antivirus program on their 'puter, they're protected. WRONG! It's like having sex with a condom full of pinholes or a diaphragm full of pinholes. It's dangerous! All the antivirus programs have an update feature. Get the updates, at least once a week. If it has an autoupdate feature (like Norton Antivirus), enable the autoupdate. That way you stay protected (at least till your one year of free antivirus updates runs out).

Another issue is using the Windows Update to keep your Windows Operating System updated with fixes and patches to close the holes these viruses exploit. The Windows Update tab is under the TOOLS menu at the top of your Internet Explorer screen. Be sure to download all critical updates. The any other updates are optional.

Hope this helps.

McAfee concerned about new 'bagel' virus

Anti-virus software maker McAfee Inc., of Santa Clara, said it's raised the risk assessment to medium on the recently discovered Internet virus W32/Bagle.ad@MM, also known as Bagle.ad.

This new variant is a mass-mailing worm that is packed using UPX and comes in the form of a password-protected .ZIP file, with the password included in the message body as plain text or within an image, McAfee said.

As of Tuesday, McAfee said it had received numerous reports of the virus being stopped or infecting users from the field -- with most of the reports arriving from Japan, Australia, Germany and the UK.

The worm is a mass mailing threat that harvests addresses from local files and then uses the harvested addresses in the 'From' field to send itself. Once activated, the worm copies itself to folders in the System Directory that have the phrase "shar" in the name, such as common peer-to-peer applications, and adds a registry key to the system start-up.
So if there's a virus being sent around, my mailbox usually gets hit I was smart enough not to open the attachment , but I'm glad I have Norton watching my back.

If you do not have any protection at all you can go to AVG6.0. This is a pretty good anti-virus program that is free. I have been using it for about 2 or 3 years now and have no complaints.

But it's like Stick said you have to keep it updated on a regular basis for any of them to work.

The way I see it.

When I worked for a school, we used AVG Free. I like it, but updates are few and far between.

I don't recommend it to my customers anymore as I got far too many callbacks. I'd rather it be fixed and stay fixed and so would they.

Not to say Norton is perfect, far from it, but it is the one I recommend.
