New Business Opportunity in Demopolis

So I’m sitting around trying to figure out a way to “get rich quick”. I’ve decided the most booming economy around these days is gambling. Since Bingo is only allowed in Greene and Macon counties (so far), I started thinking of ways to capitalize on Demopolis’ views on gambling laws.

It’s become very apparent that in Demopolis, you can gamble for any amount of money as long as you are paid in gift certificates instead of cash. The casino here in town regularly pays out amounts of $20, $50, even as high as $100 or more on one play. Our City Government sponsors this by accepting the $500 license fee on each slot machine. Since our D.A. and local law enforcement either can’t or won’t see that as illegal activity, I’ve come to the conclusion gambling IS legal in Demopolis (just don’t pay out in cash).

Back to how I can get rich… I propose a new type of casino here in Demopolis. Instead of you traditional slot machines, we’ll be using computers, loaded with the best gambling software available. You’ll be able to play any game on the PC—from slots, poker, blackjack, etc. We’ll even be able to hold tourneys with players betting against each other. We’ll include sports betting also. (Why not?) In fact, we’ll have card tables, roulette, dice, you name it. Every customer will just start an account. We’ll sell “credits” for the video games and chips for the tables. All the PC games are controlled by a central server, so cheating won’t be possible. Credits and chips are redeemable for gift certificates to Wal-Mart, Piggly-Wiggly, and other stores around Demopolis. We’ll even pledge 10 percent of all proceeds to go to the Demopolis City Schools Foundation. With this operation, we’ll even be able to offer online “gambling” to anyone too lazy to leave the house. Anyone interested in making some money??

Now, I want anyone to seriously attempt to convince me this would be an illegal operation as long as the “adult arcade” is considered operating within the law. As long as we never pay out in cash, there’s no reason why we can’t enjoy a successful business ripping off those who can’t afford it. It’ll be interesting to see how the city attempts to tax our PC’s, card tables, etc. so they can get their slice.

Why not? We can even have a separate playroom so kids don't have to suffer heat strokes locked up in their mother's cars while they "get their game on".

I am concerned, though, that the PC might be too hard a learning curve for many of the patrons of these adult arcades. Even though the purpose of the PC's is to make City Hall re-evaluate their "gaming" policy, we may have to scatter a couple actual slot machines to get the initial traffic. Also, we can have a few "practice" PC's where you can learn the games without actually spending cash. Online casino's use this tactic very effectively, since the winning seems to come easy and often when money isn't at stake.

Interesting ! It is my understanding that if you have a business that only provides a service...not a product, the rules are different. Taxing applys to items/products etc. When I first started Options and Answers in AL, I was told I did not need a business license since my business was to solely provide a service...not sell any items. If this is still true... Make the computers free to use. Set up a shell company in GA that can reward the winning "players/participants" with certificates to stores that are national chains like Wal Mart, Goodies, Sears or restaurants. The winners could choose which certificate to redeem in an interactive online site. GA may tax the business and require a license but if this is such a great business move, it might be worth it.

You might even get some kind of gov. grant if you use this business to 'teach' more ignorant citizens computer skills. Just call it job skills traning.

What a great service you wound be providing !

If the job skills training business works and you offer the childcare...Guess what?

The state of AL provides free meals to many small child care centers if the family is eligible for state assistance/ medicare or other gov sponsored freebies. In some cases, the state even pays for the childcare. But a host of business issues come up with childcare even if it is free>

The point of the whole exercise is to exploit gambling here in town. It would be fine if the City taxed the PC's; that would just show they support gambling whole-heartedly and prove my point. The point I'm trying to make is gambling is legal in Demopolis as long as you don't win cash. We could pay out in merchandise, but gift certificates spend just like cash. (Also, anyone gambling here in town must not be able to leave town to Greene County or Philidelphia, so whereelse besides Wal-Mart or the grocery store would they spend their winnings anyway?) I imagine we could accept Gift Certificates back for credits--at a lower rate of exchange of course, say 50% of the value.

What I want from this post is anyone in our City government or law enforcement to make an argument as to why I couldn't do it; to explain why a slot machine is any different from any other form of gambling. The only reason we haven't seen full-blown casinos open up is the owners know all the need are the slots--it's proven the most addictive means, and also the easiest to control the winnings on. With slots, the house is guaranteed to win. Even in a place a big as Greenetrack, winning a jackpot 2 times in one month on one machine is "impossible" without cheating--what does that tell you? The illusion of gambling is you could win the big jackpot at any time--with one play even. That just isn't the case.

My hope is by pointing out the Pandora's Box that could be opened by allowing and supporting slot machines, maybe our officials will see the error of their ways. The law that supposedly opened the door for these slots clearly states the games have to be based on "skill" and not "chance". You can't argue that pker, dice, roulette, etc. take less skill than a slot machine--quite the opposite actually. My point is, we could open this casino here in Demopolis, and the only way they could stop it is to shut down the casino next to Family Dollar.

If gambling is illegal in this town then you shouldn't be able to get around it with loop holes. Why not pay out in gold? Weigh it and whatever the going rate is that is how much gold you win. Then set up shop next door to buy gold................
