Halloween A Night of Tricks, Not Treats

On a night when police were out confiscating toilet paper and shaving cream, actual crimes were being committed. Three fires were set within an hour or so of each other in Demopolis Thursday night. The first was a van on fire in Elmore Ally, which is suspected by the DFD as arson. The second, called in 8 minutes after the first, was a vacant house at 504 First Ave., which reportedly cased minimal damage. The third, about an hour later, was at 401 E. Washington St. This is the 3rd fire at this house in the past seven years. The fire "gutted" the house. Asst. chief Morgan stated, "Things like this happen from time to time. A few months ago we had several fires in one night." At least everyone's yard was safe from deadly toilet paper.

In other news....Congradulations on the Demopolis Tigers on an undefeated season. Friday nights game might have been ugly, but it was a win, securing the tigers first undefeated season in 50 years. The Tigers will face off against Beauregard in the first round of the playoffs this Friday in Demopolis. Everyone should come out and support our Tigers after a brilliant season. The D.A. Generals finish the season without a win. lack of players and too many injuries hurt their chances at success this year. I was a freshman at DHS the year the went 0-10. Their are greener pastures on down the road....Dr. Fitz-Gerald is once again pushing for a one-cent sales tax to be used for Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital. Among other things, to pay off indifent care costs and increase revenue. He supports this with reports of a lack of "morale" from hospital staff due to less pay that competing hospitals and other health care facilities. I agree the hospital needs more money, but bad staff won't be cured with a raise.

Finally....The Grand Marshal of the Childrens's Day Parade this year is Bart Butler. Bart has spent the last year of his young life battling AML, a variation of Leukemia. He's undergone chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, and a daily dose of 30+ pills who's side-effects are usually worse than what the disease makes you feel like. Through it all, he's kept a positive attitude. He will have to wear a surgical mask while in the parade due to his still extremely weak immune system. Congradulations Bart! This has to be the classiest pick for a Grand Marshal we've had in a long time. Nice job.
