In Carbon Hill, AL, as many as 3 tornadoes destroyed a third of the town. So far, 9 lives are reported lost in Walker County, where Carbon Hill is located. The elementary school there is rubble. On life reported lost in Cherokee Co. 40,000-50,000 reported without power statewide, most within the Birmingham area.
Preliminary figures from the National Weather Service show that more than 50 tornadoes touched down throughout the East. At latest count, 17 people were killed in Tennessee, 12 in Alabama, five in Ohio and one each in Pennsylvania and Mississippi. Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, who has declared a state of emergency, was trying to get to the Jasper area Monday to inspect the damage. In Alabama, emergency officials urge citizens who need assistance to call 911 or their local emergency management offices.
