I just don't understand why a school that doesn't entrust it's school nurse, a licensed and trained nurse, to dispenses to my child a couple of tylenol for a headache thinks that they are okay in entrusting a teacher to whack away at my child at their own discretion. It just makes no sense to me.
Ms. Curtis's episode may be old news to you but the undelying issue is still very alive, at least with this Demopolis mother.
Mosiac is entirely correct in his/her observation that this IS a forum for opinions and exchanges. Regardless of whether or not it is an old issue and one that everyone in Marengo County is tired of hearing, Mosiac has just as much right to voice his/her opinion here as anyone else. Mosiac will not be the last one to come in behind everyone else, read the posts, and voice an opinion on this or other issues. As new members come onboard, you can look for this to happen as they read through the forums and "catch up" to the rest of us. Mosiac, your views and opinions ARE welcome here! Don't let these people "beat up" on you and discourage you from posting on this website. You will have that from time to time if you are on a controversial subject (I know because I've had plenty of experience here!).
Furthermore, Mosiac was correct in his/her statement that this a subject that Nursescare (aka Michaela Curtis) is keeping alive and still very passionate about. As long as this subject stays alive, people are going to comment about it, good, bad, or indifferent.
As for the comment about the school nurse and the Tylenol, that's a shame! I know the school nurse and she is qualified to dispense Tylenol. However, the longer you live in Demopolis, the more you will come to realize that this entire town has a habit of doing most things backwards from everyone else in the free world!
Corporal punishment ..at least the improper use of it is not 'old news.' Children are not only being hit but also sexualized in the name of 'corporal punishment.'
2 weeks ago, an 18 yo local girl got into trouble in class. The male teacher spanked her after commenting, "It's about time I get to spank that cute little *****."
It may be an uncommon event but, it should NEVER happen. Uncommon is not good enough when it comes to physical or sexual abuse.
It's amazing to rationalize why it is OK for a teacher to leave bruising. Do you also blame the spouse when hit for not having supper ready? Parents, students and teachers should be held accountable for their actions.
Classrooms must have discipline. But hitting children and lowering their pants to look for marks is not acceptable, even when the child is 7. These facts were not disputed even by the school board.
I agree with some comments that were made earlier in that if you do not wish your child to be spanked, then you should have to come immediately to the school to pick your child up. The spanking works as more of a deterinant than that of a punishment. The problem is that too many kids are coming to school needing a babysitter more than a teacher!
The teachers that I personally know all have the same complaint that their students don't have enough home training to sit quitely through a class without disrupting others. If I had a chils in the school system that was unable to get a half descent education just because some little goof off is constantly disrupting the class then I have a problem with it! Every child has a right to a great education, but if the teacher can't teach due to constantlytelling some kid to sit down and be quiet then what? On top of that you take away their abillity to discipline? Kids will know if a teacher can't do anything to them and they WILL exploit it. You have got to let the teachers have control over their classrooms!
The state of Alabama has mandated that school nurses are not to dispense medication that has not been provided by parents. This is new in all public schools this year, not just Demopolis.
I have already stated that I agree that a child should not be spanked without parental permission. Suspension should be a viable option. Mosaic, you can say anything you wish, as long as it follows the guidelines you agreed to when you joined this forum. However, you have to know that everyone is not going to just applaud whatever you say. People have disagreed with things I have said. I have no problem with that. Stickman and I have disagreed about a couple of things, but I'll say this about him. When he brings up an issue that stirs up controversy, he does it because he believes in it. More than that, he knows what he is talking about. He is very informed about every issue he writes about. So I respect his opinions, whether I always agree or not. As you stated when you brought this thread up again, it is old news.
I teach in a different school system. I love the kids, but the discipline problems that teachers and administrators face are unbelievable. If it were not for the Demopolis City system, I don't even think I would allow my children to attend school. I would teach them at home or maybe send them to the Prep School. My point is that the Demopolis City system is one of the best public school systems in the state of Alabama, and I don't want to see anyone or anything mess up the opportunity that my children have for a good public education.
Hometown Gal is right. This doesn't need to be discussed anymore. Most people are sick of this issue. I apologize to everyone for even responding to this thread and thereby keeping it going. There are many other issues that are facing Demoplis right now that deserve attention.
Post on Mosiac!! If everyone had the same opinions, this site wouldn't be necessary!
Like I've previously stated, I was with Mrs. Curtis until she attacked the school system for erroneous reasons in the name of CP. If I were to support this effort, it would be like myself defending someone that murders an OBGYN because he/she occasionally performs abortions. I don't personally agree that abortions is right, but you can't condone someone who opposes it in the wrong matter, regardless if the cause is just.

Did this happen in Demopolis? I can't recall anyone in High School at DHS that ever got a paddling while in High School.

If this teacher did in fact make this comment toward an 18y/o female student, I want to see this teacher fired from his job! This is out and out a TOTALLY inappropriate comment for ANY teacher to make regarding ANY student! This was way out of line and raises red flags with me about this teacher! Sounds like a child predator in amongst the faculty!
My next questions are: Who was the teacher and who was the student? Were there any witnesses when this remark was made? Has it been reported to the principal or other school officials by the student and the student's parents?
Sadly the situation did happen, locally. The statment was made in front of a few student witnesses and yes it was reported. To avoid stigmatism and harrassment in the comminuty, the family will keep this underwraps. Considering the accusations and outright false statements made about my son, I fully understand the family's fear. She did nothing to deserve this and yet many locals would blame her. It is not hard to understand why the schools can cover up these incidents. The family and the victim are tried by the public.
In 1999, there was a similar situation. A then substitute high school teacher at DHS was involved with making overtly sexual comments to female students during school and at school events. 4 senior girls and their families came forward. The school administration strongly and carefully worded the fact that if this became public, the girls would face social isolation and stigma. The school promised to never hire this man again.
I believe Demopolis has the ability to provide an excellant education when schools and parents work together. But a child's safety should not be the price. 99% of the teachers are outstanding. The problem is letting the occasional abusive teacher remain in the ranks of the excellant. The system is stacked against parents and children. I have heard from a family who was told that their son's eligibility to remain in city schools would be in danger if they filed a police report for the bruising from paddling. Would you want your child in county schools or would you choose to keep your mouth shut?

If this did indeed happen, and I have no reason to doubt your word, the teacher should not only be fired but should also be in jail. The 18yo girl is an adult. She is old enough to file charges on her own. I wish she would do so to protect the other young women at the school.
I agree. Abusive teachers should be out and in this case in jail. But that is not my call in this situation. Authorities have been notified. The danger from this teacher is real...not potential but I can not share the names with the public. I understand the family's worry. In my experience, the child is blamed. The original story gets distorted and changed to lay blame on the child. People with no firsthand knowledge make accusations and hold out false statements as true. I went public because the my son was not the first, or the second. There was a pattern of excessive discipline by one individual and this history was known by the school. I wanted to prevent another child from being bruised in the name of discipline. Considering the lies and accusations we have faced, I understand why others keep silent. Like many industries, getting rid of the one bad employee can be a legal nightmare that often results in just passing the buck to avoid litigation.
I want to ensure that all children receive a quality education in a safe environment. As I have said many times, Dem City Schools provide an excellant education. Danger arises when anyone has blanket immunity to use physical force to make their point. Clearly, this young woman is the victim of more than her paddling. Her family and she have decided not to put her in the spotlight to be victimized the the community. We can only pray that the teacher will head the warnings of administration.
We each should demonstrate personal responsibility and social responsibility. We can make our schools even better if we support qualified teachers in their efforts to maintain discipline in an age appropriate non-violent manner.
If a teacher makes a comment like that then that teacher needs to be fired. Of course you know that the eighteen year old is now an adult and that does not mean that the teacher is a predator. However, like what happened in Montgomery a student made a false report on a teacher with the help of his parents and filed charges on the teacher. All the teacher was trying to do was break up a fight that the particular student was causing. That teacher was arrested and it was later learned that the student in fact lied. Teachers should be allowed to take over in the classroom and straighten it out before you have schools like the ones in Montgomery. We keep police officers in the schools and still have problems mostly due to lack of support from parents.
