When my daughter was suspended from school for her skipping episode a few weeks ago, it wasn't a vacation by any means. She got up at the normal time, cleaned house all day, did laundry, scrubbed the bathroom (which she hates) and did lessons online for me to check when I got home. No, it wasn't a vacation in the least. And that is the kind of thing that works for this child.

If the student is disrupting class and so forth on a regular basis, then I think something like the boot camp is a good idea. At one time, Demopolis had some sort of "alternative" school for these types of students at the Old High School. Do they still have that?

From what I am told, yes...they do still have alternative school. Further, from what I am told, the kids spend their days there picking up trash and doing janitorial work (along the lines of what my daughter did on her suspension) so it can't be a bowl of cherries over there. I am not sure why it's not utilized more often or, if it is, why I've heard so very little about it.

I know picking up trash and doing janitorial work is no picnic but I do wish that we had some kind of alternative school where they taught the kids things - like how to behave - and if need be have a counselor or therapist on site.

I have talked to some kids who have attended this so called boot camp thing. They talked about how disciplined it was, but they also talked about the new ways of creative acting up they learned from the fellow campers.!!!! VERY, VERY SAD. My children would not attend these!!!! Solitary confinment, not camp!

To the ones who e-mailed me about this...Sorry about the absence. My system was down. I'll try to answer a few of the questions.

Alternative school is an option. Here in Demopolis city, SAP is excellant. Rev Moore runs it and does a great job teaching school subjects, discipline and respect. BTW.he does not paddle or hit the children in anyway. This works for him..I wish the schools used him more effeciently. Children in SAP do not do cleaning or janitor work..that is a different punishment doled out at regular school. SAP is class and assignments but seperate from regular classrooms and held in condemned 'old school building.'

Discipline, abuse and denied parental rights are seperate issues that should not get confused. Parents must have the right to choose types of discipline and must also support schools that respect their wishes. Parents must support school discipline but teachers must not commit abuse and be protected.

It happened again in Marengo County

2 new cases of local teachers going too far again this year. When I refer to 'local' schools, I am including all public schools within 30 miles...Dem City, Linden City, Marengo County.

I held back this info until parents gave consent. Both cases are new and included ER visits and police reports that verified teachers doing these things to students.

Mid Sept 2003...a 5th gr sub teacher used the side of a ruler to hit an 11 yo boy for talking and getting out of his seat. She hit him at least 6 times and also pinched his side deeply. 1-2" bruises were left in 6 areas involving both forarms and left leg. The pinch also left a bruise on the side/abdomen. This was witnessed by other students.

Last week, a teacher used a closed fist to hit a child in the chest as punishment, causing the child to fall to the floor and leaving 'tissue injury' on the boy's chest. Also witnessed, police reports and hospital visits.

Folks..this is not discipline. this is abuse.

Society as a whole is becoming angrier, that's just a plain and simple fact. I cannot understand teachers acting like these examples but I see it in people of all walks everyday.

Re: Punish Demopolis Schools “By Any Means Necessary”

Great Point Manic.. You said it very well. I mean I don't want to see a child get beat but if you give them a spanking you might just get their attention and let them know who is boss!!
