Demopolis gas prices around the national average.
By now everyone who drives has noticed the increase in prices at the pump. Small towns may be slow to catch on to some things, but high gas prices aren’t one of them. When looking at the national averages for gas prices in the U.S., Demopolis gas prices fall right with the averages. The U.S. average for premium is $1.796 a gallon. Here in Demopolis, most of the pumps on 80 read $1.79 for premium, with a 10 cent knockdown for each lower grade of gas. Some stations though are charging $1.82 per gallon, with one ringing in at $1.86. What you may not notice is the 9/10 cent added to each price per gallon, making the price actually more like $1.80 than $1.79. After some research and talking with a few owners, I found out that prices on gas change when the price from the distributor changes. Most stations will check with the dealer daily to see what the current price per barrel is, and change their pump prices accordingly, either up or down. No one cared to comment on charging more for gas they already paid for (where the price as risen, so the pump prices are risen as well, although the gas in the tanks at the time were bought at a cheaper rate.) Since Demopolis seems blessed with a ton of gas stations for a small town, the value of competition really helps to curb any price gouging. The average markup for gas is 3-5 cents per gallon. A while back one owner got in bad graces with the other gas owners because he was using a ½ cent markup on his gas, beating the other prices in town by almost 5 cents a gallon. The law states you cannot charge less than what you are paying for gas. The stations I noticed the largest prices for gas are the ones with the fewest pumps to choose from. The markup is probably necessary in order for these folks to stay in business. My only hope is I’ll be able to fill my truck up someday and get change back from a $20, instead of having to add to it.
Litterbugs BEWARE.
Demopolis horticulturist Amanda Smith is heading up the effort to clean up Demopolis streets. About 15 citizens attended the “Litter Busters Strategic Planning Meeting”, which met last Friday. Among the efforts came some proactive solutions. City Clerk Vickie Taylor has volunteered to distribute litter bags throughout the town. Councilman Woody Collins was nominated to revitalize the previously successful “adopt-a-mile” program. It was also announced that we now have an “undercover litter officer” on detail. Some citizens have even taken the dangerous approach of confronting litterbugs head on; one going as far as following a person who threw trash on the ground from his/her car. I personally wouldn’t recommend this type of action. Other ideas presented were: Car litter bags free to the public, city workers provided with golf carts and street vacuum cleaners to cover more ground per day, detention and SSP students use their free time to pick up trash, provide volunteer walkers with pick-up sticks and garbage bags. I like this way of thinking. Much better than the “punish all offenders severely” approach.
Website came close to shutdown.
Due to some instances and circumstances we weren’t aware of until today, the Demopolis.biz website almost saw its premature death. Although you have seen the sponsors we proudly display on the site, the webpage does not draw any profits from anywhere. We started this site as non-profit and will continue to keep it that way. Brian (the Webmaster) and I had to make a quick decision to either fork a large chunk of cash now or shut down the site. After some contemplation, we decided our cause here was worth the money. Even though the site hasn’t seen the activity and participation we would love to see, we feel it will eventually catch on. I know there are folks out there that want truth and honesty to be heard, and more will find out the local papers won’t print it unless to suits there needs first. Newspapers are local. As one person put about our site,” you’re broadcasting nationally and internationally.” We’ve managed to get in the top 10 in every search engine used on the internet. We’re the only website for Demopolis that allows you to express yourself however you like. That means if you have an opinion, news, or pertinent information, everyone in the Country that looks for Demopolis on the net will read it. All we want is for you to take advantage.
