No flying cows, but a twister just the same.
On February 15th at 8:36 p.m., a F-1 tornado touched down in Marengo County. Though no injuries were reported, several homes were damaged. The tornado lasted approximately 4 minutes. Damage was reported to homes on Landfill Road and Chickasaw Drive. What’s even more disturbing about the incident is the apparent lack of warning or knowledge of the potential deadly storm. Though the twister was about 10 miles from Demopolis and about 3 miles from Linden, no weather siren went off. None of the local news stations reported a “tornado warning” for our area at any time. There were “tornado watches” for the area. Most of us that have lived in this area for while know we get a “tornado watch” pretty much every time it rains. Guess we all need to start paying attention:-)
Middle School may be hotter this spring.
Demopolis Middle School is now $8000.00 worth of air conditioners short thanks to a theft committed last week. Though the Times says “Selma Police” are investigating, Demopolis Police Chief Avery states they haven’t recovered any of the lost goods. Superintendent Wesley Hill is holding the air conditioning company responsible, since they “left them out”. No word how many units were actually taken. Air conditioners have to be hard to carry and conceal. If DMS hasn’t increased it’s security, I imagine anyone can steal whatever they wish without fear of being caught.
News and Notes. - • The Delta Regional Authority may finally release the 1.25 million dollars promised to Demopolis to build the new higher education facility. Mayor Caldwell and gang are to travel to Montgomery to finalize the paperwork.
- • Linden City Council may vote soon to increase the sewer and water rates there. Among the reasons given are higher costs vs. revenue taken, and possible expenditures foreseen in the future.
- • Mayor Vice of Linden cannot add “Alcohol” the city employee handbook under substances city employees cannot consume while on duty. This seems confusing, since I’m pretty sure every job I’ve ever had clearly stated no alcohol consumption while on duty. Attorney Alex Braswell states you can still fire an employee that reports to work drunk.
- • Finally…Someone please tell the Times no one is interested in what Michael Reagan has to say. It’s painfully obvious the Times is a conservative publication. We don’t need extreme Republicans like Reagan and Palmer telling us why the Democrats are so evil. This is a LOCAL paper. Let local people have a say. Calling Michael Reagan a “guest columnist” is the same as calling “American Idol” a “guest program” of the local Cable Company.
