Breckenridge strips Vice.
March 3rd wasn’t Pat Vice’s best day as Mayor of Linden. In a majority vote by the Linden City Council on newly appointed Councilmen Dennis Breckenridge, Vice was stripped of his hiring and firing powers as Mayor. As a result, all City department heads will be able to handle promotions in their respective departments. Dept. heads will also be able to bring hiring and firing considerations directly to the Council, instead of to the Mayor. The entire move was based on Police Chief Jeff Laduron being able to hire a particular Sergeant he wanted for the Police Dept. Not too long ago, Laduron and Vice got into a spat over city police talking to Council members. Vice accused Laduron of insubordination when Laduron told his officers not to talk to any Council members per Vice’s request. Vice stated he only meant regarding police business, not altogether. Vice says this move is not legal and wants the opinion an Attorney General, even though his own legal council says it’s legal.
Linden becoming “Little Vegas” over Grigger’s retreat.
Since D.A. Greg Griggers has decided to leave alone the casinos giving out coupons instead of cash, Linden has once again decided to cash in. The City Council voted to once again charge for a license on each machine in use, upping the original $100 per machine to $300 per machine, citing Demopolis having charged $500 per machine. In addition to the apparent support of gambling in Linden, the Council approved the opening of a “Bingo Hall”. It wasn’t disclosed who applied for the permit. The cost of the license is $300. The “Chuck E. Cheese” law doesn’t say cash payouts over 5 dollars; it says payouts with cash “value” over 5 dollars. The law also states the machine has to have a payout based on the player’s skill and not on chance. The Alabama Appeals Court reversed a decision in Mobile County that stated the video poker and slot machines in the adult arcades was based on skill. In the reversal, the Appeals Court stated even if a player has skill in “playing the odds”, it does not change the fact the machine is still based on chance. This makes all the adult arcades illegal in spite of the “Chuck E. Cheese law. The city support of such institutions, when they are finally shut down for good, should warrant punishment as an accessory to the crime. If it’s illegal to make money off the machines, then it should certainly be illegal to gain taxes off said machines.
Don’t believe everything you read.
So, according to he that is Goodloe, drinking alcohol is no different than taking a Claritin for your allergies. Is this a stand really worth taking? How bad of an alcoholic are you that you feel it justified to get drunk while on the taxpayer’s clock? This reference to alcohol is referring to Linden’s Mayor’s request to add alcohol to the list of illegal drugs not to be taken by city employees while on duty. To compare the effects of nicotine and caffeine to those of alcohol, which Sutton feels is a just comparison, is about as ignorant as you can get. The core reason that alcohol should be added to that list is simple. It’s the same as a DUI. If you can get a DUI for consuming it, you shouldn’t be allowed to consume it while on the job. Besides, how much sense does it make to not have alcohol listed as an illegal substance, but you can be fired for being drunk?
