Tiger Baseball Keeps Up With Tiger Football

Congratulations Tigers!

The Demopolis High baseball team has quietly put together one of the best regular seasons in school history. Their record of 23-6 ties them for the most wins in school history; they can break the record today at 4 p.m. at DHS field. They've gone 6-0 in the area, making them area champs for the seventh time in the last nine years. The Tigers have won 22 of their last 23 games. DHS has outscored their opponents 41-6 in their last 3 contests. Playoffs begin Wednesday, April 23rd at 7 p.m. at DHS field against Tallassee High School. Join me and others to show our school some overdue community support.

Rosenbush gives buildings to city.

Bert and Mary Louise Rosenbush have proven their fondness of Demopolis. They recently announced their plans to give the two buildings of the Rosenbush Furniture Co. to the city of Demopolis. The buildings together span the city block between Main St. and Walnut, running parallel to the railroad track going through downtown. Bert explained Mayor Austin Caldwell had contacted him previously by letter, stating he “asked us a price of the building…He also asked us if we would consider giving him the building.” I’m not sure what Austin meant by “him”. The buildings are said to be in good shape, and are estimated to be worth around $500,000. Caldwell has already expressed interest in moving the Fire Station and putting an office for the public safety works in the buildings. He also stated since Bert Rosenbush is the only living Jew in Marengo Co., he plans to make one of the rooms a museum of Jewish artifacts. If I may add one suggestion: Leave the painted lettering on the side of the building. Few areas in town say “Demopolis” like that building does. It would be shameful to change the buildings look.

Noteworthy…
  • The Mayor and City Council have given the green light to taking bids on street repair in the city. Tops on the list are: Blacks Drive, South Walnut, Front St., Ashwood, Maple Leaf, Greenwood Circle, and the Junction of Al’s lane and Forest Brook. Estimated cost of these streets is $292,000.
  • Freddy Armstead has seemingly won his battle to stop public work on private roads. Until now, it wasn’t hard to call your commissioner and have a load of gravel dropped on your dirt road. That will end on May 1st, 2003, thanks to the ruling by Judge Eddie Hardaway. A side note: To prove just how “country” Marengo Co. is; of the 640 miles of county roads, only 53 % are paved:-)
  • Rumors are bound that Demopolis Academy is getting new management, and will be soon known as “Demopolis Prep”. Other names suggested: Demopolis “Shield me from poor people” Prep, Demopolis “Not more than 10 to a grade” Prep, and the popular Demopolis “If your white you’re alright” Prep. I have reservations about a school that requires a class field trip to see real live black people.
