Historic Season Ends Too Early

Tigers end season with 24-7 record.

A large hometown crowd turned out for the 1st round of playoffs between the Tigers and Tallassee High School. Tallassee jumped up quickly 2-0 in the first inning, thanks to a sac fly and a passed ball at the plate. The Tigers came back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the 1st. The Tallassee added 2 more unanswered runs, and won the game 4-2. Matt Chambless took the hard luck loss, with the usually prolific Tiger offense missing their marks. The Tigers end their season with the record of 24-7. Congratulations to the players and coaches for a great season.

Girl Scout cookies are serious business.

The Tombigbee Girl Scouts Council is suing former troop leaders Jana Alston of Linden, Debby Remmert of Tuscaloosa, and Johnella Jones of Demopolis in Tuscaloosa County Circuit Court. According to the lawsuit, the three women failed to produce over $6,000 in profits from cookie sales last year. According to the Council leader, bad cookie debt is an ongoing problem.Read the full story here.

Demopolis chosen for ACE program.

Board members of the Alabama Communities of Excellence program today announced that eight Alabama communities have been selected for a pilot program focused on supporting and developing communities to be more competitive in attracting industry. The Alabama communities chosen to participate in the ACE Program are: Brewton, Monroeville, Demopolis, Wetumpka, Valley, Guin, Haleyville and Guntersville. Communities with populations between 2,000 and 12,000 will have opportunities annually to participate in the ACE program. Communities not selected this year will receive feedback and encouragement to participate in the program in the future.

D.A. getting new headmaster.

Though they aren’t saying so yet, Webb Tutt will most likely be the new headmaster and head football coach at Demopolis Academy. The school’s headmaster Sid Atkins is retiring at the end of this year. The Times seems on board with pushing D.A. into being a better school. They all avoid the obvious: Where are the black students? The school is far inferior academically, athletically, and financially to the Demopolis Public school system. The only reasons you have for going to the Academy are: A) You child has social difficulties and requires 1-1 attention and constant supervision, or B) You have a problem with blacks and can afford the 200+ monthly bill to keep your child in an all Caucasian environment. I do agree having more than one school option is good for a town, but let’s not kid ourselves.

Any student black or white can attend Demopolis Academy. I really think $200.00 dollars a month is real cheap to have God present at school. DHS is superior in alot of areas, but don't knock D.A. if you've never attended school there.

When I was in high school, D.A. was giving out "scholorships" to students that could get their football team winning. I don't recall them offering any free rides to black athletes.

Look, I am not going to down DA because I don't know how they do things now. But most of my good friends went to DA and it was almost a joke as to what they were allowed to do in school. Lay on the floor and go to sleep, opt to go do errans instead of class......on and on. Like I said it was a running joke that I had to actually work in school, while they were kicking back having a good time. The fact that DA was not as difficult academically is completely obvious though. When students from DHS who primarily make C's and D's go to DA and instantaneously start making A'S you know something isn't quite right. In fact I know a guy that left DHS his sophmore year to go to DA, the reason was so he could qualify for an academic scholarship for college. The fact of the matter is that DA is going to have to make some major changes in their program so that they are actually preparing students for college and the working world. Not to take away anything from the friends that I have that went there, but I think back to the 12 or so people that graduated from DA the same yr I graduated from DHS and I can think of only one or two that actually were able to stick it out in college. Just my opnions though, if DA has changed for the better or the wrose.....POST IT. We want to know whats going on!!

There is no way i will debate that D.A. is better than DHS, my point is that anybody can go there. As far as I know there has never been a lawsuit filed against the school. DA is also way behind the other private school in the area, major changes have been needed at DA since I started 1st grade there. Most of my friends went to DHS and were better prepared for college/ and life far better than I was.

You could finish last in your class and still be in the top 5:-)

I guess I really can't point a finger at anyone regarding the whiteness of D.A. I do feel they should do more to attract blacks to the school though. Any athletic scholorships given out should be offered to black students first. If for no other reason to break the cycle.
