Only a little more than 130,000 votes out of 24 million were the difference. Birmingham native Ruben Studdard became the new “American Idol” and Alabama’s new ambassador to the nation last night. Despite already putting out singles working on his new album and being possibly the most recognizable face in America, Ruben continues to show his love for our state. If he had come in second last night, it wouldn’t have taken anything from him or his accomplishments. The fact that he did win show the rest of America loves Ruben as much as we do. Ruben Studdard day may be a national holiday next year
Dump protestors getting their wish for now.
Under the delusion that Uniontown can become a tourist attraction, the “Concerned Citizens of Perry County” got an injunction to put a hold on the proposed landfill just outside of Uniontown Alabama. They are looking to restore old homes in Uniontown to promote tourism instead of allowing a revenue-generating landfill to be constructed. These are the same old homes you see for sale for the price of mobile homes. The landfill may never happen if these citizens get what they want. Maybe a dump isn’t the best way to generate revenue. Seriously though, what other options do they have? The mentality of those opposed is the same mentality that’s kept Demopolis and Linden from growing the past 20 years. Older citizens who don’t what anything to change are going to oppose anything that may do just that. Why would they want the community to grow even a little when they really don’t want it to grow at all? It’s the bitter cycle of the richest part of the community, who always seem to run things, fighting against change because they have no need or desire for it. Meanwhile, the rest of the population continues the “black belt” way of life.
News and notes… - Demopolis municipal airport is getting some repairs thanks to a $265,000 grant from ALDOT. Having a safe and usable airport is important to attracting industry. The money will be mostly used to by land on both ends of the runway in order to be able to clear off some trees.
- The Demopolis 167th Guard unit returned home Tuesday, May 20th to elated family and friends totaling around a 100 or so. Though the unit never actually went into battle, they’ve been training the last four months in preparation for war. Welcome home soldiers!!
- Memorial Day weekend will be the high point of the “click it or ticket” campaign. If you normally drive without a seatbelt on, find a safe tree off by itself and ram it at a high rate of speed. Maybe you’ll learn something from the experience. Road blocks will be everywhere, so buckle up and keep your insurance card close by.
