Remember the Titans.
The school formally known as Demopolis Academy is now called West Alabama Preparatory School, with the “Generals” being replaced with the “Titans”. The new principal is Tracy Duckworth; a science professor with 11 years experience at UWA, and a formal teacher at Demopolis Academy. Duckworth has referred to “WAP’s” reputation as a “glorified daycare”. (See Demopolis Times interview) Her wish is to improve the academics at the private school. Webb Tutt is the new volunteer head football coach. He was heavily rumored to become the new headmaster prior to Duckworth’s hiring. Changing the name from Demopolis to West Alabama is an attempt to broaden the region in which the students come from to the school. This would in turn increase the number of students enrolled, increasing the revenue generated. So far, no apparent attempts are being made to integrate the school. What struck me about the article in the Times is the timing. Duckworth basically crapped on everyone that’s graduated from DA prior to her arrival, and did so as the last class at “DA” marched across the stage to receive their diplomas.
River travel not recommended this holiday.
If you’ve visited the gallery, you may have seen some of the pictures we took after the weeks of rain had caused flooding and damage. The river at this time is no better that it was two weeks ago. Travel is still hazardous to your boat and yourself. Driftwood, river trash and fast currents make boating unsafe at this time. You can get current river conditions by visiting www.demyb.com, or by calling the Yacht Basin at 289-4374.
Have a happy and safe Memorial Day!
Hopefully the weather holds out enough so we can all do some backyard grillin. Hope everyone enjoys their holiday and eats their fill of BBQ. If you didn’t get anything off the grill today, ole Dave ate a piece for ya
