For those who didn’t see it, Demopolislive.com got a nice mention in the Demopolis Times this past Sunday. For those that have made it here because of the article, welcome! I wanted to get rid of some confusion that may be caused from the write up. First, we don’t have any “chat rooms”. We have messageboards, or forums, where everyone posts what they may feel about something on there mind. If there is demand for a chat room, we’ll be happy to put one up. Another thing is we require registration if you want to post comments in the forums, and we have a forum where registering isn’t even required. The more people that participate, the better the site will be for everyone, so I encourage all to register. We only edit or delete posts that are considered racially offensive, deemed illegal, or display or advertise pornography. To give proper credit for who came up with the site: Brandon “Bebo” Ellis and I discussed doing an informational website about Demopolis. At the same time, webmaster Brian (not Bryan) had come up with the idea to create a messageboard for the town, similar to what the old Demopolis.com page used to be. After sharing our ideas together, along with Admin Jeff, we created Demopolis.biz. We’ve since changed the name to Demoplislive.com. Other than that, a fairly accurate article
Walnut getting a bigger intersection.
The intersection at US Highway 80 and Walnut St may get better soon. The Alabama Dept. of Transportation has finally given the OK to city officials to see about changing the infamous intersection. The word is they want to widen the intersection to allow for a Right turning lane, and a “stack” lane for left turners. In order for the design to be effective, those turning right off Walnut onto 80 must be able to do so without oncoming traffic being able to slam into them. This calls for an additional lane on 80, which is apparently in the plans. A firm from Tuscaloosa had been contacted to draw up the plans. Once finished, they have to be submitted to ALDOT for approval before work can begin.
Memorial Stadium to be reserved for school teams only.
Citing excessive wear and tear and added expense for upkeep, the Demopolis City Board of Education discussed a policy limiting the use of Memorial Stadium. In short, the policy states the Board can’t grant permission to community events to use the stadium if it involves players on the turf, or “hours of player traffic”. The policy also states that the DHS athletic director, along with the Principal, will be given sole responsibility in deciding what non-playing activities will be allowed to use the stadium. Overuse of the field is be attributed to the “Tiny Tigers” football league, who used the stadium for its games last year. The league was charged rent to play there, but ran short of money and had to be bailed out by the City Council before the season ended. According to Superintendent Dr. Wesley Hill, the goal of the policy is to be able to allow events without charging “rent”, but at the same time preserve the field’s turf for the games it’s intended for.
