5th Anniversary of 9/11
As we all know, tomorrow is the fifth anniversary of the worst terrorist attack our nation has ever faced. The film makers and politicians have a lot to say right now, some of it genuine, some not. But as a private citizen I just wanted to express my gratitude to every fireman, policeman, nurse, or anyone who volunteered to work to help our fellow citizens on Sept. 11 and during the following period of time. I want to state how sorry I am for those who lost loved ones. I want to say thank you to every soldier who has fought in the war on terrorism and thank you to every loved one they left behind. I also want to say thank you to our President. I both agree with him and disagree with him. This is not a statement in favor of anything. But I appreciate our President for doing a good job of holding us together following 9/11.
I know we all remember where we were when we heard. I was teaching fifth grade. The teacher next door called me into the hall so she wouldn't scare the kids. We ran to the library and saw people jumping or falling from the towers on CNN. I'll never forget the horror. I'll also never forget how we as a faculty came together, held hands, and had prayer. My daughter was 4 at the time. We tried to shield her from TV, but she came into the room on the night of Sept. 11, 2001 and witnessed a replay of the planes crashing into the towers. She saw my husband and myself crying. We explained it to her as simply as we could, but how do you explain such horror to a child?
We joined together as a nation following 9/11. We were Americans, not Democrats and Republicans. I am not saying we should do away with our political identities and blindly follow whatever the government tells us. But our nation needs to come together again. We need to turn to God and to each other. The threat is not over. It never will be. Yet we seem to have forgotten. We're complacent as a nation. We think that because 5 years has passed without another attack that we're safe. That's what they want us to think, because they want us to be just as horrified and surprised the next time we are attacked as we were on Sept. 11, 2001.
May God keep and protect us. May God bless America.
