Davie rescinds DHS principal offer

DEMOPOLIS — For the Demopolis City Schools board, it's back to Square One, as Dr. Walter Davie informed board members Wednesday morning that he decided to decline their offer to become principal at Demopolis High School.
Citing personal reasons, Davie — the principal at Tuscaloosa's Davis-Emerson Middle School — turned down the offer he enthusiastically accepted the night before when interim superintendent Dr. Neil P. Hyche telephoned him with the offer.
"He was extremely enthusiastic last night," said school board chair Gary Holemon on Wednesday. "In fact, he asked Dr. Hyche to get him some realtors lined up on Friday."
"We did everything we were supposed to do," said school board attorney Alex Braswell. "For whatever reason, he had a change of mind. He just couldn't articulate a reason."
"I appreciate the opportunity from the Demopolis City Schools system," Davie said on Wednesday. "They've been very gracious in their actions towards me. For personal reasons, I have decided to decline the offer.
"The interview process and all actions and contacts with everyone in Demopolis — there was nothing from the Demopolis school system or any personnel or contact from that end that has caused me to change my mind. It was entirely a personal decision."
Holemon said the school board would meet Thursday at 9 a.m. to discuss its options.
"The three options will be: to choose from the remaining candidates, open and extend the search or appoint an interim principal for the upcoming school year," said Braswell.
The remaining candidates include Demopolis Middle School principal Clarence Jackson Jr., Woodlawn High School assistant principal Janice Drake and former Thomasville High School principal Leon Clark.
Hyche helped the Demopolis board in hiring former DHS principal Dr. Isaac Espy, who left in May to become the principal at Tuscaloosa's Northridge High School, and former superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers, who resigned last month to take on a similar position in the Saraland school system.
"I have never been involved in anything like that in 50 years," Hyche said. "I have never seen this. When I was a principal, I had a teacher, one time, that didn't show up the first day of school and had signed a contract, but nothing like this.
"I called him back (after the meeting) and said, 'Man, you got a 5-0 vote. You ought to be on top of the world.' I've known him for 25 years, and have never had a reason to be critical of the man. I'm probably the one who hired him as a teacher. He's always been very quiet, did his job very effectively. I'm terribly disappointed."

Amen to that! The stupid Board is going to jack it up even worser. Why not get Mr. Barlow to be intermin principal unitl a thorough search is done? THEY (THE BORAD) is past stupid. I wholeheartedly agree with regard to the laughably faulty grammar. It's typical of the current popular style to substitute emotion for precision in speech.

Dumb and dumberer...so to speak.

LOL swimsnacks I was about to say the same thing!! Then I saw your post!! I just was wondering where their education came from!!! I also would like to add that our schools awards speak for themselves and NO Vickers was not responsible for them!! We all really know what people's issues are and it has nothing to do with how bad our schools are, because it is an excellent school system, especially in this area!!!

I doubt very seriously that Davie's decision is a bad reflection on DCS. He sites personal reasons, and it should be acceptable. Personal reasons don't necessarily mean negative feelings toward DCS or the City of Demopolis. Personal reasons could include anything from being near aging parents (which is always my reason for turning down offers from other places) to being closer to kids in college. And honestly, you think that you can pull up and leave those other ties, but a good night's sleep (or lack there of) can remind you of what is truly important in life. Bigger paychecks and more prestige is not always at the top of everyone's wish list. So, let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

As i said before this schools system is nothing but a joke , thats why nobody wants to work here , all you hear about is all these damn awards but guess what this is not the only system with awards each system has many awards , linden was the only torchbearer school in marengo county, marengo couty school system always have high reading scores every year . The biggest problem with all of you on here is that demopolis city school system is going down and nobody wants to face the fact and nobody wants to work there. All you hear is the blue ribbon , reading program so what thats nothing , they still aint doing nothing , get with the program , also to all of the english teachers on here get your red pens and grade this one for errors !!!!! We just need to wake up and realize its july 3, and you need a elementary tracher , reading coach, aides, special ed corrdinator, principal, superintendent& english teacher , but you are the one with the awards . Deal with that !!!! I wish you the best of luck .. Look like to me the good ole boys has f****d up again d**n just cant seem to get right . School starts august 10. Demopolis City Schools is NOT the only place looking for teachers, principals, superintendents and the like. Most schools apparently wait until the last minute...trust me...we are facing this now with my husband's current job hunt. He wants nothing more than to be able to teach here in Demopolis, however, there are no science teacher positions available.

He did his internship here and was marveled at how the students were well behaved and how the teachers had their classrooms set up. He said he really wants to stay here if he could. This is coming from someone who has gone to school everywhere...not Demopolis. He didn't even hear of Demopolis really until he met me 7 years ago.

Believe me, if noone wanted to work at DCS then why are there so many teachers who are staying there for their entire teaching career? Wouldn't you think that if it is as bad as you believe it is, they would be looking for teachers for everybody??
