Bush in Baghdad

Bush made a surprise visit to Baghdad on Tuesday to let the Iraqis know that the troops will be staying to help them with their government.
Do you think that we should be staying to help their government?

Re: Bush in Baghdad

I believe there are some soldiers that want to come home now. But for the most part as my husband felt in 91, "lets finish the job". They are doing a good job I have to say. And I am so proud of them. They love our country and want to serve. And lets face it the pay is not up to par. For the most part soldiers can apply for food stamps. Most want because of pride. I'm getting off topic here so I'll stop.

I think we should still be there, but not as many and not doing as much as we are. They have there own army, but we're not making them do anything, we're training them susposably. But as all that I know that have been over there, we're just holding there hands and doing there work for them... its time for us to sit back and let them figure it out for themselves.

But our misssion is to make sure they have a working government and a solid military foundation capable of attack on insurgency, terrorist, foreign enemies.

What scares me... is we spend all this time training them -- restore them to a nation capable of defense / offense and then some coup five years down the road leads us to fighting men we've TRAINED.

Things are SOOOO unstable in that region of the world right now... I wouldn't be surprised if we had troops over there for another 20 years.

Hamas in Palestine, the threat to Isreal, Iran being stubborn about their "nu-cu-lar" efforts...

Remember WW11 we still have military there. Remember Korea we still have military there. So yes it's possible. Yes things are unstable this is the place the terrorist live. Terrorist bombed a building in Germany just as we got there in 1984. Things will always be unstable. Thats what determines where our military goes. No amount of wining and grumbling is going to change things. Thats why we have military. To protect and serve our country and those that need us.

With the way we define "terrorists" now... you could probably find a terrorist or cell of them anywhere in the world...

That's the hard/curious thing about this military conflict -- we're fighting an idea and not a geographic location. Ideas are extremely tricky things to fight.

I think Bush Sr may have been smarter than we think. If we had "finished the job" in 91, we'd probably still be over there helping to rebuild the government.

Re: Bush in Baghdad

Unfornutately we've put ourselves in this situation, and now that we are there we have no choice but to "finish the job". Leaving before they are completely ready is not a option. We have "made our own bed" .....
