Miami and Shula Again?

Mike Shula enters the Dolphins coaching hunt

BY ARMANDO SALGUERO

asalguero@MiamiHerald.com

JOE RIMKUS JR./MIAMI HERALD STAFF
FORMER DOLPHINS ASSISTANT: Mike Shula, a former Dolphins quarterbacks coach, watches a workout by Sage Rosenfels in May 2003.The Dolphins' search for a coach may be making a bold and nostalgic reach toward the past with the team interviewing Mike Shula, son of Don Shula, over the weekend.
Shula spent Saturday talking with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga and his staff about the possibility of succeeding Nick Saban.
Ironically, Saban left the Dolphins to become coach at Alabama after Shula was fired by the Crimson Tide.
The idea of bringing Shula back to the franchise has been kept under wraps because the team wanted to gauge if he was indeed a legitimate candidate for the job. Having had two interviews, he apparently is.
The Dolphins have also interviewed Jim Mora and Chan Gailey twice.
People familiar with the search told The Miami Herald today that no decision has been made on a coach and no offer has been made.
Shula posted a 26-23 record during four seasons at Alabama, taking the team to a bowl each of his final three seasons. He spent three seasons as the offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1996-99.
Shula, 41, grew up around the Dolphins. He was a ball boy during his youth and returned later to serve as an assistant coach under his father before heading briefly to the Chicago Bears as an assistant.
Shula is close friends with Dolphins president Bryan Wiedmeier.
Reaching out to Shula might be a good move for the Dolphins as the franchise is seeking someone with head coaching experience but also someone who will invigorate the fan base after five seasons without a playoff appearance.
The Shula name remains the standard by which coaching excellence is measured. Don Shula won 347 games during his career, the most by any NFL coach.

They call me TAZ cause they do.

That would be so wierd to swap Coaches.

I had to stop and ask self,"Do I really need to be here", and self says,"Only in the cover of darkness."

Re: Miami and Shula Again?

I'm not knocking the dolphins any here.... but what are they thinking, did they not watch what shula did at alabama, and how many times he messed up and how he did not have any control of the football team.

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.-Sir Winston Churchill

Re: Miami and Shula Again?

But at Miami, he wont be restricted to limited scholarships, a powerful and very unsteady Board of Trustee's and Athletic Director, and Paul Bryant, Jr. ALL he would have to answer to would be Wayne Huizenga. Then MAYBE his Dad could give him some help. He [DON] sure didnt make any effort to HELP when he was at Bama. But I really dont think they'll hire him anyway.
But whats done is done, I dont wont to brake a New Years Resolution... LOL ROLL TIDE...

Re: Miami and Shula Again?

NFL may be the place Shula needs to be....he obviously couldn't motivate a group of college football players, so maybe he can go somewhere where it doesn't matter if you motivate them or not. In the NFL, they are either going to listen to you or they are not. They are making waaaaaay more money than you are anyway, so maybe his philosophy of the motivation is left up to the players would work there!!!

One day at a time!!!!

Re: Miami and Shula Again?

I'd love to see Shula get on somewhere...and not just b/c he's gorgeous! The guy is a good coach. Everybody can say what they want, but don't forget he SOMEHOW led our boys to a 10-2 season just a year ago. He really did not have much control over the team, but can you imagine controlling a rowdy bunch of college boys without any head coach experience? NO THANK YOU! I agree with DBG about the motivation factor. Kinda like when you go off to college and all of a sudden the teachers don't give a rats a$$ if you show up for class or not...if you want an education, you'll go. Personally, a salary of millions and fines of thousands for misbehavior, missed practices, etc. would be GREAT motivation for me!! It will be nice to see somebody give him a chance--with a little more experience, a good staff, and higher-ups that actually care, he's going to make a hell of a good coach for somebody one day.

It's time for a change...
