The Demopolis City Council / Personnel Committee upheld Chief Avery's dismissal of Sgt. Tony Gary from the Demopolis Police force.
POLL: Do you think Sgt. Tony Gary's dismissal from the Demopolis Police Department was justified in light of all the other problems with other officers including Chief Avery?
I voted yes on this only because of his conviction in court. From what I've heard, Cox problably needed to be hit with a flashlight, if he was hit at all. The department and City Council avoided controversy and visits from Jessie J and Al Sharpton by not letting continue to work. I don't know Gary personally, so I can't really comment on his character. If he hadn't been found guilty in court, and was still fired, I'd have voted no, coinsidering what Avery has admitted openly about his own conduct.

I am the only one so far who has voted no on the issue. I feel in light of other officer's conduct, Sgt. Tony Gary should have been allowed to keep his job. The City of Demopolis and the Demopolis Police Department have already set the precedent by allowing Chief Avery, Ofc. Clayton, and others to retain their jobs after misdemeanor convictions. I feel like the City of Demopolis and the emopolis Police Department has just left themselves wide open for a civil suit, which is what Tony Gary the private citizen is now pursuing. To tell you the truth, I hope he wins it. I hope he gets LOTS of money out of this! Maybe then the Mayor, City Council, and the Director of Public Safety will sit down and take a good hard look at current policies and make necessary changes to streamline disciplinary procedures. What you do for one should be done for all, and it wasn't in this case.
Had Chief Avery and Ofc. Clayton been dismissed for their misdemeanor convictions, I would say that the dismissal was fair and would not think twice about the whole issue.
I do not condone the conduct behind all of it though. Derreck Cox should have been handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car (detained, not arrested) until the whole incident could have been sorted out. He should not have been left in the custody of some half-assed wanna be cop who was on a "ride along" which was in violation of DPD policy from the gitgo.
Better yet, if Alabama prisons weren't overcrowded, Derreck Cox should have been in prison for a minimum of 15 years under the "Habitual Offender Act" for his 29 prior criminal convictions and not out on the streets of Demopolis being a crackhead and getting into trouble.
I just think it's a crying shame that a crackhead cost a man his badge and career out of all of this.
It's time for Avery to step down I think. The lawsuit, if pre-trial press is any indication, is going to have him looking extremely incompetent and unstable. He would be doing the town more good by quitting than trying to ride this out. When election time rols arond again, there's alot of positions in need of some fresh blood.

I just want to know this...What Demopolis COP is going to tackle the task of arresting Derrick Cox, the NEXT time he decides to show his ***, in public,on the MAIN streets of town? Remember,DPD WILL NOT BACK UP IT'S OWN OFFICERS. Funny how the D.A. quit his job after ruining Tony Gary's career.[I'm Sure there's a story there] I only wish I had known about this site when all this happened!!!!!
When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep, like Grampa....NOT screaming like the passengers in his car! ...AND... If I had shot my husband when I first wanted to: I would be OUT of prison, by now.
first of all...i know tony gary very well...and he was treated very un-fair.i'm like u stickman.....i hope he wins enough money to buy the city of demopolis.he and his family deserve that after all the city has put him thru.
in your reply u said (and u were right) about the half *** cop riding along.
you should ask who called tony and ask him to take this half *** wanna be on his call with him ....thats where u will find the root of the whole thing....it all lies with that one person...and i hope he gets everything he deserves...
