A friend asked me to go see An Inconvenient Truth this afternoon even though I didn't think I would find it interesting. I'd urge everyone to go see - even if you hate Al Gore. I didn't go in expecting to get anything out of it and I have to say I was blown away by the stark facts presented in the movie. For those that don't know, it's basically a documentary about Al Gore trying to spread the word about global warming. He presents the matter in an interesting, thought provoking, and at times funny manner.

The problem is, he doesn't have the scientific community supporting his rhetoric. We need facts, which are out there and not innuendoes by politicians trying to stir up emotions for votes!

He actually does present facts from the scientific community.

I am sorry to have to disagree but his so called facts have been refuted over and over by the scientific majority. The saying of it in a well directed scenario on the screen doesn't make it scientific fact and most people, not educated in science, and following the output from the scientific community in the form of seminars, scientific papers. etc. would not know the difference. That is how some politicians operate! Pray on the ignorance of the majority. I don't use that word to criticize but most people, not educated in science, are ignorant of what is real, proven fact and what are just public words meant to disguise real objectives. I don't mean any of this derogatorily but having been educated in the sciences I some idea of what I speak.

This is simply not true. It is more of the politicizing of science by those with vested interest in the results, in this case: oil, coal and electric companies, and other big polluters. It is discouraging that the disinformation campaign has taken root with otherwise intelligent people: it is our children and grandchildren who will pay the price for the willful ignorance we choose to believe on this subject. Go see the movie. I will buy your ticket. It discusses the source of this misconception in detail. Every reputable climatologist without ties to big oil agrees with Gore's core statements. Global warming is real. It is not a liberal or conservative issue, neither Democratic or Republican. It is a human being issue. I also have a degree in the natural sciences, and I also have some idea of what I speak.

Just one highly regarded scientific organization that I don't think has been "polluted" by vested interest is the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Below is a quote from them and the link for the site. There are many other scientific groups that are in complete agreement.
Abrupt Climate Change
Most of the studies and debates on potential climate change have focused on the ongoing buildup of industrial greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and a gradual increase in global temperatures. But recent and rapidly advancing evidence demonstrates that Earth's climate repeatedly has shifted dramatically and in time spans as short as a decade. And abrupt climate change may be more likely in the future.
I'm not going to attempt to change your mind Fleming. It would be (as my father loved to tell me when I was younger) like attempting to argue with a fence post. I still think you, along with everyone else, should go see the movie and judge for yourself and not what you've heard others say about the movie.
I found this article on National Geographic's website. It discusses whether some of the facts presented in the movie are fact or hype.
The comments to this article are very interesting too.
I guess that by presenting these articles I am attempting to change your mind, but I happen to like arguing with fenceposts. I still think you should go see the movie and judge for yourself.

The truth is, I have heard nothing about the movie! However, I have followed the studies on climate changes for a number of years and got my info from scientist and legitimate scientific organizations. It is a very controversial subject that has been politicized too much. I don't think Al Gore has very good credentials in science to be the decider of the argument.
