West Wind Technologies has proposed a new paper mill to be located in Linden's industrial park. The paper pulp would be produced from Honduran Bamboo; a crop that apparently can be grown in Marengo County's climate without problem. The proposed plant would produce pulp and electricity. It would be able to not only power itself, but be able to sell eletricity as well.
According to the Gazette, the deal is "99% done". The "deal", according to the paper, hinges on surrounding land owners who would have to collectively offer up 15,000 acres (to start) of land to farm the bamboo. This would be accompolished by either leasing the land to the company, or the owners actually farming the bamboo for harvest themselves. Kevin Dixon, chairman of Linden's Industrial Development Board, stresses the key to this deal becoming a reality is the cooperation of the landowners.
The company is scheduled to return in one month for a progress report. |

Before you get too excited, you can check the (process/company) at

It surely sounds like a "long shot".
Having been involved in "industrial development" some years ago I learned from the experts that there are a myriad of "companies" out there that will offer an industrial dev. board a lot of pie in the sky as long as they will "finance their development". Don't get me wrong. I am all for private development of new companies with new ideas but it seems that when many of them can't generate investor interest they turn to municipal/government entities for their financing. Probably 1 in a million survive! Older members may remember Bergeron Industries at the Demopolis Airport!
I am not trying to "dampen the coals" but am trying to inject what I think is some degree of realism.
I would love to be wrong!
