A friend of mine is doing a project for her daughter who's expecting their first baby this summer. It's a file box of tried and true helpful hints for new parents. I told her I would see how many I could come up with from my wonderful D'live family. Sooooo...
If you have any great words of wisdom that you have learned either by trial and error with your own children or have heard from your parents or friends in raising kids, let's hear them! They can be on any topic whether how to make bathing a baby easier to what helps with a colicky baby or temper tantrums.
Here's one of mine that always worked with the guys when they were tiny (I know that's hard to imagine, but trust me they were actually little at one time)
Teething
Peel a carrot and cut in small pieces for baby to be able to handle. Put in ice water for about 20 minutes. These make wonderful teethers when they are fussy with sore gums. Also dipping a baby spoon into ice water and rubbing the bowl of the spoon over the gums is also very helpful.
A tip that worked great for me was to always lay the baby down while they are still somewhat awake. You have to start it while they are newborn and this way they learn to go to sleep on their own. A friend of mine did it and I was so impressed that I tried it with my own two children. It was wonderful not having to completely rock them to sleep and then cross your fingers that they didn't wake up when you laid them down. Then when they are older (6 months) I could just say "nap time" and take them in and put them in their bed and they would go to sleep just fine. We still rocked and cuddled while awake.....just didn't have to rock them to GET them to sleep.

when putting sheets on the crib, do 3 layers. crib sheet with protective cover ( to protect sheet from accidents ), then another crib sheet with protective cover then another crib sheet. this is helpful when in the middle of the night the baby pees or pukes in the bed you don't have to remake the crib, just pull off the soiled sheet and you have a fresh clean sheet underneath. a friend told me about this and i wish i had heard or thought of this when mine were little.

Very true about the boxes toys come in! My nephew and neice got a John Deere motorized jeep for Christmas and the first thing they said when they saw the box was "cool, a big fort box!" They drove the jeep around for about 10 minutes and it was back to the box!
A little drop of Karo syrup in the bottle seems to help constipation.. We have a 4 week old, and it works for her everytime.. I have heard apple juice is good too..

Prunes are also good for that-My momma lives by the prunes baby food-she's always givin' it to her grandbabies when she thinks they are having problems going to the bathroom. BTW they usually make the funniest face when you give 'em the prunes.

That's a good idea! I could have used that one myself when the boys were little! LOL
One item we had to have on hand when ours were infants was the infant glycerin suppositories. They were miracle workers for helping with colic or when a baby just has a little gas and is having trouble passing it or a dry stool. Instant relief! You don't put it all the way in, just far enough to lubricate everything down there and 98% of the time you get instant results. I know it sounds gross but sometimes when your baby is hurting you do what you have to do.
