Time for COTR to have big name entertainment scheduled to perform just after the day parade. The choice of Grand Marshal did nothing to draw in the masses. Great way to honor Mayor Caldwell, but not someone that will want people to drive to Demopolis to see in a parade or meet. If you go back and check the head counts on the best attendence years, the choice of Grand Marshal may have played a big part. Remember when Heather Whitestone, the former Miss America was GM? Around 50,000 or so estimated. The night parade has to be evualated. We may need to send out observers to similiar events to find out how they are doing. Does the Bar-B-Q tie up too much area for the night parade? Has it outgrown the ball park and should be moved to another location? If so, where? Do the BBQ people, really care or even watch the night parade? By my observations, most of them were trying to pack up and get out of town. Most of the people at the Civic Center dance was older adults, should a teen-only dance be scheduled elsewhere? Should the park be open for RVs?
These are just some areas I think that need discussion. I may be wrong on all of my observations. One thing I do know is I have learned a lot of people doing a little on a project is a better than a few people doing a lot. I plan on helping more to help plan and execute for 2004 COTR. This should be an interesting after-action meeting for the committee. Each function and event need to be disected for improvements or elimination.
