Orgeron fired at Mississippi

Ole Miss has fired Head Coach Ed Orgeron, ironically whom the Ole Miss president said Nov 1st his job was safe unless something crazy happened. Well I guess being ahead of MSU by 14 in the 4th qtr. and then losing was crazy enough to send him walking.

Re: Orgeron fired at Mississippi

And the coaches just keep dropping!

Quote:
A few weeks after Ole Miss brass announced that head coach Ed Orgeron would be back in 2008, the third-year coach was fired Saturday, ESPN.com has learned.

The news comes a day after the Rebels lost to archrival Mississippi State 17-14, capping off a winless SEC season for the first time in over two decades. The Rebels dominated much of the game, but momentum swung after Orgeron opted to go for it on a fourth-and-1 at midfield in the fourth quarter leading 14-0. BenJarvus Green-Ellis was stopped and the Bulldogs staged a frantic rally.

In three seasons Orgeron's teams won 10 games and had several close losses against ranked teams, but they could never get a big win. His recruiting classes were always highly ranked but the Rebels struggled on both sides of the ball, ranking near the bottom of most statistical categories in the SEC.

Orgeron, who had been Pete Carroll's right-hand man at USC, had continued to recruit well. He had hoped he could get to 2008, when Texas transfer Jevan Snead, a former blue-chipper, would become eligible. But the turn-the-corner win never came.

A week ago, after Ole Miss outgained but lost to top-ranked LSU 41-24, Orgeron and his staff hosted more high-profile recruits than he'd ever had on any weekend during his tenure at Ole Miss. He seemed confident that'd he'd be back for 2008, but one of his assistants pointed out that votes of confidence rarely mean anything.

"They just say those kinds of things so you keep recruiting," said the assistant.

Said Orgeron, "I know we're not out of the woods just yet."

He was right.

Re: Orgeron fired at Mississippi

In today's Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Orgeron said if he had to do it over again--gamble on fourth down--he would get to do it again.
News flash...he won't. Unless he gets a job as a high school coach in Louisiana.
That decision--tabbed by the C-L as "The Call," gave the Bulldogs life, and took the all the wind out of Ole Miss's sails.
Some name floating out and about, including some mentioned by Archie Manning on College Football today are Will Muschamp. Auburn DC, and former Colorado/Washington head coach Rick Neuheisel. Wouldn't mind seeing Bobby Petrino throw his name in the hat.
Something needed to be done, though State was the better ball club yesterday.

Re: Orgeron fired at Mississippi

Orgeron has never really sounded like a coach who had any "fire" to me. He has seemed like someone just going through the motions.

I guess when you don't win a single SEC game that it is time to go.

I'm a new soul!

Re: Orgeron fired at Mississippi

I just read a report that So Miss had fired Jeff Bower, if Ole Miss were smart they would hire him before he had a chance to clean out his office.

ESPNNEWS is reporting that Jeff Bower has resigned this afternoon after 17 years in Hattiesburg. And Houston Nutt is out at Arkansas also, refusing a 2 year extension after his big win over LSU on Friday, Nutt says "No Thanks"...
