The Yankees are trying to aquire another 3B- MIke Lamb from the Rangers. In order to get him, they'll have to take someone off their current 40-man roster.
Aaron Boone is having surgery to determine the extent of injury to his knee. Most think he's done as a Yankee though he's determined to get back this season. Drew Henson has been officially waived by the Yankees to pursue his NFL career.
Besides Phillips, there are others competing for the position. If we say the Yankees complete the trade for Lamb and send a pitcher to the minors, he'll be competing against Enrique Wilson and Miguel Cairo on the current roster. The Yanks have also signed Tyler Houston to a minor league deal.
The Yanks have Phillips listed as a 2nd baseman on MLB.com, which may be a good thing. If he can estabolish himself as a 3B as well as a backup to Soriano, he'll have an outside shot at the 25 man roster for opening day.
