Academy awards

I was listening today on the radio that the Academy Awards are coming on soon (today maybe)
Am I the only person that gets tired of a bunch of over paid left wing liberals patting each other on the back each year for making movies? The quality of movies and televison have been lousy over the past few years. Why don't we have an award show for teachers, firefighters, or people whose jobs make a difference in this world? And I also heard that many actors are going to use the show as an oppurtunity to bash Bush. What gives them the right to stand up and say what they think about our President? Is there opinion any more valuable than mine? I/m not saying to censor free speech im just saying that they are all so stupid that they don't realize that the things they say can and will negatively influnce there careers because I already have several actors that I refuse to watch on television and movies.

I totally agree with your post, and I have no intention of watching their show.

I don't even care about the Academy Awards or almost anything that Hollywood puts out anymore. Lately, I've had my eye on independent film festivals, like Cannes and Sundance, or even the Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham.

Those are actually good artistic works that don't have the "curb appeal" to draw Hollywood.

rammajamma,

the Veterans of Foreign Wars has programs where we have awards for our teachers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, Boy Scouts, ROTC and JROTC and others. We will give an JROTC Cadet of the Year Award to one of SFC Black's students at DHS. We have given award, to local Boy Scouts when they obtained Eagle Scout rank. We have tried to award our firefighters and law enforcement officers but received no nominations. The local winners of some of our selectees move on up through our district and state competition and competes for the national title. We presented a life saving award to a boy a couple of years ago for saving a todler who fell in the river area. We sponsor essay contests for grades 7-8 and 9-12 but received no entries. The national 9-12 winner received a $25,000 scholarship.

You are correct when the right people don't get recognized on national TV. Remember last year when James Brown received Kennedy Center Honors and in the last month or so was arrested for abusing his wife. That was a farce.

At least the motion picture industry is a good tax base and truly helps our economy. That is one positive aspect.

Well, take into account the millions and millions of dollars it takes to film a movie (if filmed in the US), then look at the ticket prices that are taxed. Again, millions upon millions. Then look at all the merchandise and DVD rentals...even the actor's multimillion dollar salary is taxed.

That's an enormous tax base. Just think how the economy is fueled by the motion picture industry...
It is a HUGE industry in this country.
