Easter Tradition Continues PDF Print E-mail

Since the early 70's there has been a constant in Demopolis:  The rabbits can be found a Sue Manning's house every Easter.  Anyone that grew up in Demopolis remembers the house at the end of Main and Pettus St.  The rabbits, over 200 of them, would cover the entire front yard.  Passersby were welcome to stop, look around, and take pictures if desired.  It became a special part of a special time of year.

Two years ago, the rabbits stopped coming.  Ms. Manning, due to failing health, was just physically unable to carry on the task.  Sadly, Ms. Manning passed away in June of 2006.  Since then, the rabbits have been away.

This Easter, however, the rabbits have found a new home on Maria Avenue.  Her family has brought back the tradition, and with the rabbits have brought the nostalgia and good feeling of Miss Sue's legacy.  The rabbits (over 100 by my count) are tastefully arranged, with different scenes acted out by the inflated critters.  The children loved the decorations, and the backdrop provides the perfect Easter setting.

I would like to thank Catherine, Shannon, and everyone that had a hand in bringing this tradition back.  The location has changed, but the memories - both created and remembered - are still the same.
